The Journey

Theme proposal for Debian GNU/Linux 7 "Wheezy"

The Journey

Screenshot Gnome 3

Notes

This artwork uses elements of my "LISP machine" proposal for Squeeze. I am glad to have the opportunity to bring up the idea again for Wheezy. The colorful wallpaper is accompanied by a background for Grub and the various login screens, which uses the same colors but is more plain. The login-backgound is designed for a smooth transition into the desktop wallpaper.

Under some elements I have added a README, explaining where the files are located in the Debian filesystem and how they are configured. This is supposed to help people testing the theme.

Inspiration came from the "Verne" artwork of Fedora 16, which convinced me that a desktop wallpaper can tell a story.

I wrote down some thoughts about the picture here.

LISP machine

Lisp machine

The photograph of the CADR LISP Machine was taken by me in the MIT Museum, Cambridge on October 9th, 2010. It shows the complicated wiring of the machine, which was hand-assembled by Prof. Richard Greenblatt in the mid-1970s. The machine played a significant role in the history of Free Software. The attempt to commercialize the project split the MIT hacker community and was the main reason AI lab programmer Richard M. Stallman began to write GNU.

Lisp machine rounded

In several editing steps I have transformed the picture into some sort of circle or "mantra". To me it symbolizes the art of hacking.

According to the artwork requirements, only the swirl was used in the wallpaper pictures for this theme. The swirl and the debian text together were used in the DVD/CD artwork, which is not part of the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.
